my code will not input into my '98' megane ?

Your dashboard display is showing CODE becuase the 4 digit code you have entered appears to be incorrect. I did an experiment on my renault stereo by entering the wrong code on purpose and CODE was displayed on my dashboard display.
When CODE is displayed the stereo locks out for roughly 15 minutes or so. Make sure you have the correct code for your stereo. Enter the code with the finger stalk as usual then hold the button underneath the stalk until you hear a fast two tone bleep then the stereo activates. Hope this helps.
