my lights on a ford escort stay on all the time?

You need to establish if it is the switch, or something more serious. When they next stay on, pull the headlight fuse from the fusebox, hopefully this will cause the lights to go out. If the fuse kills the lights, then it would point to the light switch. They are either on the indicator stalk, or a seperate rotary switch on the dashboard. If it is the rotary switch, prise it out and have a look at the wires, checking that they are not chaffed through or touching each other. Disconnect the wires (noting where they came from) and test the switch, or replace it with a new one. If your switch is on the indicator stalk, this will be a bit more difficult to remove / diagnose (and will probavly cost more!). If your lights are on and stay on when you remove the fuse, call an auto electrician as it means your lighting circuit has somehow bypassed the fuse, putting you at a much higher risk of electrical fires. . . . . .
