Thought someone may find this helpful. We bought our Zanussi ZCG7690XN just 4 yrs ago. For nearly 2 yrs the main oven control stopped working. Never got round to replacing the timer controls- ~£80 or so. Read through some threads and thankfully found a few helpful. What I found difficult after accessing the control unit was recognising the correct wires to connect so as to isolate(over ride) the timer unit. Finally sorted this and presto it worked. The same process may help those who wish to replace their unit with a new one.
For those who will try, take safety precautions. If the spark generator works, there is likely power to the timer unit (and oven). If not check fuse, confirm mains supply.
The control unit is accessed first by unscrewing top oven front plates to gain enough room. Then with a flat screw or similar tool, take off the two small clock knobs and the two adjacent burner dials. you would then need to undo four little screws two on each of the burner dials. You can now gently extract the controls from below -can be tricky, (may or may not require using a plier to bend a bit of metal). With the unit out, turn it upside down and you would be looking at the rear of the circuit board with a blue wire, two brown wires connected to the relays and a red wire feeding back to the main oven dial(beside the spark generator). A green earthing is attached to the side . Leave this alone. All you need to do is to join the red wire to the nearby second brown(live)wire. I did this using connectors. Any other sensible means should be fine. The blue wiring returns to the light bulb and back with the others to electrics at the back. I took this off the timer as well.
I previuosly had recurrent problems with the grill spark unit connection- burnt off. Sorted this out by fixing the connection (access from the front top oven, unscrew a small metal protecting plate to reach it).
I do apologise if some find this too lengthy. Any questions are welcomed.
