no sound?

All drivers and hardware seem to be working, i've checked that the mute button is off, checked device manager/properties. The shortcut, which was one of the 'speaker' is now one of those blank boxes with a blue bar across the top. Around the time i lost sound i lost Solitaire & Freecell etc. I managed to re-install those but cannot seem to find how to get the sound back.

Sounds (sorry) like a driver problem. You need to go to control panel, system, hardware, device manager and see what you've got under the sound devices (near the bottom) Do you know what type of sound card you have? You should be able to download new drivers off the interwebnet. Feel free to email if you need more advice.
