how can i fix the speed control on my Kenwood mixer?

The variable speed function on my kenwood 901 mixer is faulty.

I have one speed, does the green button do anything or is it likely to be something else?

the green button is an overload cutout. the speed control is done through a lever on a cam that is controled by the speed dial.
