How can I keep my computer from rebooting?

Hi, you need to reformat your pc, although you would lose the data that is on there. You could also use a reload cd, although this would only overwrite missing files. The ideal and cleanest way to restore your pc to its full working order is to reformat, then reload windows. If you are on broadband, you would need to install a firewall to prevent online hackers, and a good method is to use a firewall router (buy from most electronic shops or online). The of course the excellent norton anti-virus should be installed which we are offering Free with every re-installation.

Use a boot disk to go the a: where you would normally run fdisk. When your at the a: just go to the c: and then to the c:\windows directory. Once your in there find the file called EMM386.exe and delete it. Then take the boot disk out and reboot the machine. It worked for me when I was having this exact same problem of continual looping. There was no EMM386.exe in the config.sys but I did find it in the c:\windows directory and when I deleted it, I got to the Operating System just perfectly with NO MORE REBOOTS AT AL

you could try this one it sounds to me like a virus

1 i asume that u r running xp
2 control alt del brings up the task manager
3 look to see if there is a particular file that is using a lot of resources, (note there will be one normally the last in the list that displays about 90 odd % this is normal as this is the amount not being used)
4 if there is a file that using a more than normal end the task to give you back the resources.
5 look for a file that is somthing like averserv
6 assuming you have found one end tasked the the affending file your machine may try to shut down with a error message
7 go to run from the start menu and type (setup -a) this will stop the machine from rebooting you will need to be a bit quick as you will only have a few seconds to enter this info and hit return or click on ok
8 once you have done this it will give you time to update antivirus programs or down load cleaners if it turns out to bes asser worm you could be left with file that antivirus programs keep brining up that are not really virus but are still concerning they could have many different names but (swa bliss d or swa small c) spring to mind to remove thease file reboot into safe mode and remove files .

If were to make up a Dos boot disk, let the machine boot up and wait for one of your reboots, this would establish if there was a hardware or software problem. It sounds as though it is a Windows thing but you never know. The virus answer mentioned previously seems like the best bet. Stinger2 gives a list of about 40 virus's it can deal with.

The same thing is happeing to my PC, about every 10/20 mins it just blacks out and reboots, and when it has loaded up it says your computer has recovered from a serious error.
Is it a virus?
And no iv not added any new hardwere to it.
plus the biger thing that is anoying me is that my god dam Apple G5 is rebooting and not loading back up. and iv payed 2000 quid for it and its Mashed!

Have you added something to it recently ?

If so can you try removing it again ?

I found memtest86 very useful when I had similar problems.
You can create a diskette (or perhaps even a CDROM if you don't have a diskette drive).
This utility is designed to test your memory DIMMs - but if you get reboots during this, then we can eliminate the Operating System and the hard disks as these are not used in memtest86.

When does it reboot? As soon as it has started up? After 1 hour? When using a particular application/hardware device?
