service life of cam belt?

every mechanic I have spoken to recommends 30,000 miles or if you are a low milage driver every 2 years.

As far as i am aware i change cam belts on petrol engines at 40k. As a rule find out in the service book/handbook what it says and change at two thirds of what it says. You are then playing safe.
If you have just bought the car with no proof of a recent cam belt change then get it done at next time in the garage.
