Reset alarm?

we have just moved into a bungalow and we do not know code for the alarm previous tenant has died so we don't know alarm code or how to reset it we pressed the panic button and set alarm off and had to wait for it to turn off itself

after connecting alarm to power, only the key pad lights up, but nothing else. and when i press the buttons nothing happens, no sound at all.

I'm not sure what kind of answer you're expecting. You've given nonindication at all of the make and model of the alarm or the control panel (if separate). So really there's nothing anyone can offer at this stage.
For speed, you might be able to get some info from the manual (installation and / or users manual), which could be available with a simple search.
Post again with the make and model and we'll see if anyone drops by with some help.
