But before you dismantle the toaster check for power - the socket and the fuse in the plug - the machine's operating leaver will not stay down if there's no power...

There will be what are called Security Screws underneath - a safety thing to keep amateurs out. Probably Torx Screws.
Amazon will sell you a set of security drivers for about £5 / $6
