How can I fix my dishwasher that is not getting water?

Our AEG F55002VIOP dishwasher stopped getting water after I poured in the salt container 1 kg of salt (and did not set it on for another cycle unti the next day) - without checking on whether it was asking for salt or not.

I can think of two things:
1. The in hose filter is not letting any water (what is the role of this electric in hose filter anyway). When setting on the dishwasher it doesn't look like the water is getting past the in hose filter;
2. There is something within the dishwasher that was blocked by the salt I poured in - but what could this be. I am not sure how the salt mechanism is.
