Car won't start Citroen picasso xsara 2004?

My Citroen Picasso xsara 2004 ran out of petrol I put in ten pounds of petrol and it is turning over but won't start the battery warning light is on but that has been on since I got the car. The engine light comes on sometimes had it put on diagnostic machine 4 days ago everything else was fine.
