420 now only moves up a few inches at a time?

420 now only seems to want to go up a few inches at a time... To re-engage it, I have to switch off the arm power then back on again for a few inches more! It is DC and emergency battery powered and if at top of stairs, it happily descends to bottom, no problem... Is there a quick solution to this?
