hayter heritage 10/30 ride on mower engine will not turn over?

was running fine but then refused to start...with the key turned to start position the starter solenoid just goes` click`...replaced solenoid..still goes click but engine doesn't turn...the engine can be started by shorting out battery/starter terminals on solenoid temporarily...I imagined when the solenoid goes `click` it`s getting the 12v supply from the ignition switch therefore I thought the solenoid was not making the contact- battery to starter to fire up...obviously not so,and the battery is ok as it starts the motor by shorting the solenoid terminals is there any other circuit I`M missing which is causing the solenoid to click but not turn the motor
