loss of gears while engine running?

I was driving along and all of a sudden there was no gears , automatic or manual but the engine was still running.. I turned engine off to see if they would come back and then the engine wouldn't start.
I left it 40 mins and it started first time and the gears were working. Has anyone go any idea what could be causing this?
