Sharp FO-5500 will send faxes, but not receive them?

Hi,
I cannot figure this out, but my Sharp FO-5500 fax machine will send, but not receive any faxes. I have tried, and the 'sending' machine on the other end says "Failed to send fax : No answer from remote machine".

The line is plugged in, and so is the machine's power. I don't know what else could be wrong. Please help

you have probably got it set to "manual receive" instead of "auto receive", when it is set to manual the fax will ring but won't answer until you press the start button
