Mend Diplomat 600Ga Gas Oven Top

Diplomat 600Ga gas oven ?

We've recently moved and inherited a Diplomat gas oven. There is a gap in the oven door seal, at the top, with a chrome metal plate between the gap. With the oven on, door closed there is a lot of heat from the top of the door, through the gap. Is this for ventilation or should the seal go all around the door?
