how to fix a nissan primera from cutting out?

i have a 2003 nissan primera 2.2 td, the engine cuts out as if its being starved of fuel, the fuel filter is clean, but its cuts out and runs rough just before it stops. it doesnt start straight away, only ticking sounds, but left for 5 mins and then it will start, any help would be appreciated, thank you.
