how do I get ivy suckers off a rendered outside wall?

I've taken ivy down from a rendered wall but the suckers stuck fast, then a stupid painter painted over the suckers (after telling him they had to come off before painting) any ideas on how to get it back to normal?

I hardly think the painter was stupid - painters paint - it is not the job of a painter to attend to weeds. This is down to weak project management.
