If the clock has not been serviced in 35 years (or more than 10 yrs) your clock is tired, dry and worn out. The bushings get dry and worn over time so the clock needs to be rebuilt with new bushings. When your wife wound it one day the normal spring pressure pushed everything out of alignment. Mechanical clocks, like cars, wear over time and need new parts to keep them going. Contact your nearest clock repair shop for an estimate. Check reputation of shop before leaving your clock.
