Mend Hotpoint FZA51 Freezer Defrost

Why does my Hotpoint FZA51 not defrost as it should?

I have a Hotpoint FZA51 that does not defrost as it should, The red light comes on and I then have to remove the inside back cover and defrost the build up of ice manually. Is this a common problem with Hotpoints and is there a remedy, apart from 'Buy a Bosch'

you would need a meter to check the defrost element for continuity, if it is faulty just replace it
