Trouble changing lower end gears on my Suzuki GZ125?

Since changing the chain and sprockets on my GZ125 i have had issues with changing gears. Gears 3-5 seem to be ok, although not normal as they were before. However, changing between 1st 2nd and neutral has been a real issue. A points it runs ok, but at other times its extreamly difficult to 1)shift down into 1st 2)find neutral at a stop 3)change to 3rd from 2nd, and sometimes the leaver will move but nothing happens. I have been told by various people to adjust the chain as it may bee too tight, but having done this the problem still persists.
Any ideas as to what might be wrong would be very much appriociated as my once loved bike is becoming a chore to ride.

Thanks for your reply.
Didnt have to remove the pedal at all as all that was between me and the front sprocket was three bolts holding a cover in place. Also, no force was necessary to remove or replace the front sprocket. Bit of force was needed to remove the nut holding the front sprocket on, but other than that.
Hopefully a strip down isn't needed becasue im assuming that could be quite costly, i will try the clutch tonight and sweee how that goes.

if you had to remove the gearshift pedal to access the front sprocket did you properly tighten the pedal pinch bolt upon re-assembly? or did you have to hammer the front sprocket onto the splined shaft or hit the shaft itself at any time? if so then this may well have caused damage to the gearbox,which means a strip-down. sounds too bad to be a poorly adjusted clutch, but might be worth checking the clutch for smoothe operation anyhow.good luck.
