Why does my Fiat Punto click from Drive indicator to reverse & back?

When I drive my Fiat Punto it clicks from the Drive light to the reverse light on the dash + the reverse alarm comes on just for a second, then clicks back. It does drive ok apart from the constant clicking and changing from drive to reverse.
Is this an electrical problem-how can this be fixed?
