intermittent drive to cutting blades?

Either the battery has a dead cell, or the clutch itself is faulty. Early ones can be adjusted..

Do you get any other strange symptoms? A give-away is good dash lights, but engine won't even attempt to crank, or engine cranks but won't fire - until you let go of the key.

The microproccessor driven dash on these mowers does some strange things if it doesn't get it's full 12 volts.
