my toilet wont flush?

i have a derwent macdee metro 3 part syphon unit,the rod that brings the diaphram up has snapped

many toilets these days work with a plastic diaphram which wears out. This could be the cause of your problem and needs replacing. If you are resonably good with DIY turn the water off, empty your cistern of water. Take the diaphram section out (that is the bit attached to the flushing handle) take to your local plumber supplies and replace.
