You can get a good antivirus programm like AVG or Avira, both available for free and among the best, even beter than some very well known (Norton and McAffee) one that you need to pay for...
There is also an offering from Microsoft called Microsoft Security Essentials , also available for free.

If your computer is already infected, you may need to use ANOTHER computer to download the installer and burn it to a CD, then install it from the CD. Be sure in this case to also download the most recent definition files and add it to the CD. The reason is that most virus will try to prevent you from accessing the sites from where you can get an antivirus.

If you have a Mac, there are Mac antivirus available but you can't get any help from Apple as they suffer from a terminal case of denial...

Once your virus is eradicated, make sure to apply all service pack and security updates. Don't skip the other proposed updates, they may patch some potential security flaw.
You also need to update most of your applications as more and more virus now target applications instead of the OS.

Remember that most virus rely on unpatched flaws, some of those may have corrective that can be a few years old. I've effectively dodged a virus because I've installed an update a little over 1 year before that particular virus appeared. Remember the Melisa virus?
