Cassette/radio code required?

Please could anyone help me recover my radio cassette player code, i lost it when the power died, in my car. I have a four digit number, written down in the radio/cassette manual, but when entered it just comes up with "WAIT", and nothing happens. Many thanks in anticipation, Martyn.
