why does my hotpoint aquarius WD71 tear an item in every wash?

I have a three year old hotpoint aquarius WD71 which tears at least one item in every wash except jeans and towels. T-shirts are ripped so badly it looks like it has been held and burnt/melted. Any suggestions as too why this is happening and what can be done to stop this.
