Mend Rover MGF Radio Code Disconnected Battery

MGF Radio code?

I have an MGF car with the original CD radio but I recently disconnected the battery and whilst I have the 4 digit code I cannot enter it because the "code" request will not come up on the display, all I have is a mass of pixels. How can I get the "CODE" prompt to appear?
