Photos on laptop?

Windows 7.
Holiday snaps saved last year using windows xp to a dvd and just downloaded one folder to my laptop using Windows 7 each photo, when I opened the folder loaded on to the laptop, has a green dot with check mark in white.

I started naming the photo's locations and find the first two re-named, the green dot changed to red with a white x mark, so stopped the re-naming of further photo's

First why the green dot and check mark?

Second why change to red with white x?
Thanks in anticipation.

ok SD hope this makes it clearer

I’ll start from the beginning. 2011 mid July I went to France with my Canon camcorder which also takes still photo’s which load to an SD card in this case 2gb one. When I came home I loaded them to ‘My Pictures’ on my desktop using the camera’s download/transfer system and they appeared with no green dots no white tick/check marks and when I re-named some which resulted in no red dots with white x. Satisfied I downloaded them to a DVD 1.4GB of photographs. The Desktop PC uses Windows XP.

The Laptop is Acer using windows 7.
I placed the disc in the drive of the laptop and copied the folder I named France that has all photo’s in their own named folder ( 34 folders in all). It copied successfully and so I opened the France folder ‘My Pictures’ and flipped through all 34 folders in turn noting down the photo’s which required naming or re-naming and noting each had a green dot with white Checkmark, I found several and started the re-name sequence starting with first folder and area and re-named two pictures at which point noted the green dot had changed to a red dot with white x.
Sorry about this. Do you get the picture now?

Not sure what you doing here, what are you opening the files in, You do not need to open a file to rename it. Did you transfer the photos from the DVD, or a shortcut.

More info required as to what you are doing, and in what. Window editor, photoshop etc etc Where is the dots and crosses, if to top rht, it is windows normal icon for closing the file.
More info
