Ford Mondeo 1998, The overdrive light is flashing?

I have a Ford Mondeo 1998 Auto and suddenly driving on the highway the revs went up and it wouldnt change to 2nd for awhile, and the next 20 kms evertime I pulled away from a stop the same thing... then I noticed the "overdrive light is flashing - saying (overdrive is off)

Has my gearbox just died???

Im a female and dontwant to be ripped off by a mechanic... any suggestions what it could be- I checked the transmission fluids regularly and its doesnt use fluids???

I'm guessing that you have first and third. This makes it feel like a delay into second. This is third as second isn't there. If I'm correct, then it's a broken band. This is on in 2 and 4 (od). The OD cancel lamp will flash when the computer eventually wakes up to the fault. Repairable through the side of box. For specialist near you www.fedauto.co.uk

Transmission fault will eventually make O/D cancel lamp flash. Dignostic tool may help identify poroblem. If you have lost second and O/D then band is probably broken. Accesible through side of box.
