How can I fix my MTD lawn tractor shifter?

My MTD riding mower (12.5 hp, 38 inch deck) shifter has changed speeds. the 6-speed is now #2 and the 5-speed is now #1. All other speeds are really #1. I can no longer go faster than #1 or #2 speeds.
