Mend Ford Ka Engine Clutch Gear

whats wrong with my ford ka?

When engine is off I can get it into gear, but when engine is running I can't get it intogear. There is no slack on the pedal, whats wrong?

sounds like a clutch or release bearing problem, was the gearbox ok before this started to happen ? was there a loud wurring noise that went away if you put your clutch pedal down ? not sure if the ka uses rods or cables to select gears but they could be out of adjustment or have worn links. what year and engine size is it.
