test an alternator?

connect it to the battery it should read about 12.5 volts when you start it it sould go up to about 14,7 when revved then cut back .check the thick wire to the alternator is not broke and has power to it,also check the thin ones for fractures.a lot of the time the belts just need tighting or the engine earth is lose
