Mend Suzuki Jimny Car Slowing Driving

Automatic car surging and slowing (Suzuki Jimny)?

My friend's automatic Suzuki Jimny 4x4 after driving a while surges and slows, almost kangarooing, with the rev needle waving up and down; eventually slowing vehicle enough to necessitate stopping: after a rest of ten minutes, it drives again as normal. Could it be simply low ATF or overheating transmission or some such causing gears to jump? Or is it ECU-related?
