ignition problem 1996 2.5L Diesel Turbo Jeep Cherokee?

Intermitant ignition problem.To the left side of the steering wheel there are a series of indicator lights which show when the key is first turned.After starting these indicators go out.The problem is that at the moment when turning the key NO indicators are showing however all other electrical systems operate including the starter motor but the engine will not start up.Has anyone any ideas? please.
