2006 106Renault Scenic 1400cc engine Air Con Compressor not working?

I bought my first and last Renault Scenic new in 2006. It has the usual gadgets on including air con the facia only reads down to 15 degrees and I have never as far as I am aware had cold air it's always felt tepid or warm. I took my car in for service and the mechanic says that the compressor isn't working when the switch is pressed. Has anyone any idea what the problem could be and the possible remedy. If it's a new compressor I'll do without it
