computer broadband failure?

I recently had to puchase a new bt landline phone for downstairs I then noticed my broadband plus net connection which is upstairs had disconected, I unpluged the phone downstairs and my broadband connection returned, I solved the problem by puting a microfilter on the phone downstairs.The dial tone has also stoped making so much noise I can hear what people are saying now. Why did this happen?
