Removing water level knob from washing machine?

I am tring to remove the front panel on my washing machine (Maytag model PAV1000AWW). In order to do so I need to remove the knobs. The other knobs came off easily, but there seems to be some sort of trick to removing the water level knob. A few others have tried as well and nobody can figure it out. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Why do you want to remove the front panel? Why not just remove the panel at rear & get access into the panel that way? Much easier.
