Nissan Almera 16 valve 2003 model?

A backyard mechanic replaced a top gasket on the Almera and now the car dont start,he took the car to a nother guy but they cant get it to run it only backfire out the intake,what is the timing on the engine as it dont have a distubertor only sensors
