Mend Magneta 1930 Electric Bought Working

How can I fix my 1930 Magneta bakelite mains electric clock?

Bought off ebay, seller says it was working faultlessly.
First time I plugged it in it did not work, except for a faint hum.
Any ideas what is wrong and what I should do ?
