JLWM1201 Not turning/spinning?

Have just replaced the carbon brushes on my John Lewis 1201 washing machine. Bought them from buyspares online Whirlpool AWG329 or stock no 5045172161598 £19.99 for the pair. You will need a 5.5mm socket wrench ( best with a T handle ) to undo the nuts which hold the brush and holders in place.We managed to fit them with the motor in place as the back does not come off the machine. It is quite fiddly but can be done even by a woman-me! with a little help from my man.

We had the same problem on our John Lewis JLWM 1201. Ours also made a "fizzing" noise when the motor was turning in one direction which was accompanied by an electrical burning smell. Our machine filled and emptied but refused to spin. It showed no error codes.
We bought the machine new in 2005 and it never missed a beat and hasn't needed any parts until now or shown any faults. Amazing considering how much use it gets! (We are a family of 4).

I repaired ours by replacing the carbon electrical brushes in the motor. The parts I bought were: "ELECTRUEPART Carbon Brush & Holder" order code CBN9041. The packet says "To Fit: Whirlpool AWG329, AWG345, G29PWD2WH, WT19191 and Zanussi FLA1101". Price £23.00.

I bought mine from Fox Electrical, 239 Queens Road, Beeston, Nottingham, NG9 2BP. Tel: 0115 922 1005.

They were easy enough to fit in principle, its just that access to the motor was tricky. The JLWM1201 does not have a rear access panel so you have to tilt the machine forward 45 degrees, then work on it from underneath. The motor is on the bottom of the drum at the rear. Two 5.5mm nuts and one push on spade connector per brush. Very fiddly access-wise but done with motor and drive belt in-situ. I got away without removing the motor. Phew! Hope this info helps.

I have got mine working again by replacing the brushes, I got mine from A1 Tech Service in Maidenhead (Jenny)

The part number was Carbon Brush, A1410, 50226588007
Cost me £40 for both for collection.
They are not identicle replacements but are compatible.

But the ones on your machine may be different depending on the exact model and who it was actually made by.

It is the motor brushes!
Speaking to an engineer, the motors are VERY reliable, but there is a limited time before the motor brushes wear down and need replacing, these are a consumable item.

To remove them yourself, tip the machine on its back, and unscrew the two brushes in their housing at the side of the motor.

I will now take the brushes to a repairers to get replacements, screw them in and should be sorted.

The engineer thet there is no warning before these wear out, the motor is just not able to work, and as there is no fault, the machine doesn't give you a fault code.

Apparently the JLWM1201 can expect to last up to 8 years under normal use!

If the drum is spinning with little or no resistance, then the drive belt has come off.
This has just happened to my 1201 and I am taking it apart to see if I can fix it myself.
Has jsut come out of warrant too.

On mine I cant heat the motor going so hopfully there is some shut off system to stop it burning out.
