Hi, 3in1 oil???!! not sure what that'll do to the plates! from what you say now makes me think that if there's nowt wrong with the clutch cable (corroded inside-self evident) and/or bottom lever could be there's a bit missing or gone back the wrong way round or too many plates if you've had both clutch parts mixed up, google images 'honda 250n clutch basket' 3rd line down far right pic of clutch parts list may help.

hello chris,
thanks for taking the time out to help.
I did strip the clutch and checked out the wear in the chanels and the wear limits on the plates, all were fine.
the springs are also in their limit and not broken.
i am unclear if the 4 bolts holding the release bearing housing and compressing the springs should be up tight( locks everything up ) or if they should be backed off 3 turns( this allows the clutch to operate just but the clutch plates are dragging, does not feel right)
i have had the clutch cover on and off that many times i do not replenish the oil at every atempt.I do cover the clutch plates in 3 in one at aevery atempt, just to help out the plates disengage,
Any further help / advice wuld be apreciated.
Regards
Gavin

could be several things, fault in clutch release mechanism, when you got the second clutch did you strip it to check the hub and outer drum channels where the tangs on the clutch plates run? the tangs can wear into the channels (indentation) & stop the clutch plates from moving easily. 250N's should have a 10w-40 engine oil, so if yours has thicker oil could make clutch drag in cold weather. Should have 10-20mm free play at lever end on these. Broken or worn clutch spring(s). Clutch spring tension uneven. Good luck.
