Mend Miele W821 Unbalanced Spin Cycle Washing Machine

How can I fix the excessive movement of the drum on my Miele W821 washer?

When the machine starts its spin cycle the drum moves excessively as if unbalanced and there is loud banging. The machine must be 15 years old and a great workhorse. I guess the supports for the drum have become weak. Do these need replacing and if so how?

Take out the 3 screws behind the soap drawer & the 3 bolts holding the front panel.
Pull the front panel which hinges away, to access the dampers( located at the bottom on either side). They are each held in by 2 bolts.
A bit of an awkward job but well worth doing.
