Mend Boiler Fuel Saver

Glow worm boiler MK II fuel saver 40 R?

Hi all,

I do need advice on this one. Recently moved into a house- less than a week ago and it has a Glow worm fuelsaver MK II boiler Model 40 R and last night it stopped working. The pilot light comes on but does not stay on once the push button for lightining pilot is released. Got 3 plumbers to look at it. 1st plumber says that it is gone and should be changed. Refused to look at it and claims that although he could restart the boiler, afraid that i may get carbon monoxide which was scary. 2nd chap stated that I should consider changing but admitted that he has not worked on this boilers as they are no longer in use. Recommended a combi boiler.3rd chap states that the boiler is still ok-changed thermocouple and problem still occurs. Eventually stated that it is the gas valve and will order it on Monday.

My question is as follows:
1.Is the boiler still worth fixing?
2. If not worth fixing should I go for a combi boiler (property is a 3 bedroom house);
3. Any general advice on what to do much much appreciated.

Yes it is worth fixing new condensing boilers are a con
Suggest you keep what you have unless the old boiler is not financially viable to repair
All new boilers are c-rap but if you need to buy the best of the c-rap is vailliant
If you can wait for newer technology combined heat and power units hopefully is the way to go

1: seeing as you have just moved in and been 'saddled' with the boiler, you probably have other major expenses to deal with. The diagnosis of gas valve sounds correct and will get you through a doubtless uncomfortable period.

2: Look to change to a new boiler during the summer when things are quieter for installers, a combi in a 3 bedroom house is usually sufficient and would suit needs of most families.

3: When considering a combi, the main issue is water flow (lower in general than a conventional cylinder system), a 24kw boiler will easily cover the heating needs, however the higher the KW rating, the better the hot water output, the heating (generally speaking) can be adjusted down to suit the system requirements.
Worth looking at 28, 31,35 or even 37kw boilers, depending on your own HW requirements.
You will also get what you pay for, my own preference are Vaillants, though others will advise Worcesters etc. That would be down to a choice by yourself.
