hi Bill,sorry,no offence,realise you are trying to help your friend,if you have the centre hub nut off some times there are no easy fixes but to get in there and get levering and hammering,may help to let h/brake adjustment off a wee bit,often the shoes leave a lip on outer edge of drum and this hooks round the rear edge of the shoes and makes removal very difficult,often when the drum eventually comes off it pulls the shoes and retaining springs etc off with the drum but often there is no easy fix and just get in there with levers and your hammer,good luck
