my heater dont work?

my heating went on the 23/12/09 and aint come on since. no cold or hot air at all. the garage charged me £45 just to tell me that the moter has gone and the dash needs to come out at a cost of £500 pound not money i have lying around :( i feel like an ice-road trucker leaving the windows open in very freezing weather to clear my screan all the time.i have numb fingers please help sensable advice please.
