Whirlpool Stylemaster 4214289 has a loud noise when spinning?

My Whirlpool Stylemaster 4214289 has a loud squeaking/belt type noise going into a loud metal clanking sound. It does spin, and these sounds occur even when the machine is empty. What could be going wrong?
