Hedge trimmer won't start?

My Mccullogh 550 hedge trimmer won't start. I've cleaned the plug, filled with new fuel mix, but all I get is a bang after about six pulls. Machine has been used four times from new but has been idle for a year. It's very hard to pull (with the plug in).
