The light doesnt seem to go off when I start it for the first time after its been stood a couple of days but it fires up immediately. Is it normal for the light to stay on?
If I drive it, turn it off, then go to start it again, the light goes off after a few seconds.
It only has one glow plug in the inlet manifold and so long as it goes out after a few minites then its fine, it does this when its cold to help with cold start warm up but once the engine is warm it will go of a lot quicker.

If it is like my Mercedes it means (at least) one of the glow plugs needs replacing.
