Mend Renault Megane Loud

renault megane auto's gears clunk?

When at speed, the gears suddenly clunk with a loud thud and the gears seem to be shifting down. The "Auto" symbol comes up on the dash and you have to stop the car and restart. It happens several times on a long journey
